Miller Knight interviews Ryan Porter – Surveyor

Ever wondered what a day in the life as an employee at Miller Knight was like?

We interviewed our Surveyor, Ryan Porter to find out:

How did you first come to work at Miller Knight?

I first became aware of Miller Knight when looking for a more physically active job. Stuck in an office all day was giving me cabin fever. I decided to apply for the role of a Passive Fire Protection Engineer. and after I was offered the position, started work on one of the remedial jobs based in London. As I became more experienced and my knowledge of the business grew, I was recently promoted to the role of Surveyor.

Tell us a bit more about your role…….

My day to day activities consist of performing Passive Fire Protection surveys on remedial works (mostly small apartment blocks). Following the survey, I then liaise with the Contracts Manager to facilitate the works.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

The travelling. Our survey enquiries come from all over the country, so I’m working somewhere new everyday. Although I’m happy to work in the office, it’s refreshing to have a changing work environment.

What is the most challenging part of your day?

Oddly enough the travelling. While it’s great to see different places, the longer journeys can really take their toll, especially when visiting various locations all in one day!

Finish this sentence – The ideal way to start my day is …….?

With freezing cold water in my face. Most days are an early start, therefore it’s essential I’m wide awake for the long journeys needed to visit sites.

Who do you talk to most during the day?

Other than myself, it would have to be Kyle, he’s the Contracts Manager for our minor works. He’ll call me about the works to be completed, or to let me know of any completed projects.

What do you think the climate is like for your industry? Where is it heading?

Fire Protection as a whole is rapidly expanding. With the industry becoming more and more regulated, it’s no longer considered an after thought on large developments. The minor works section I work on is also growing quickly.

And finally, what do you like to do outside of work?

Get out and remain active. I’m unable to go home and do nothing, so I try to make my evenings more frantic than work. Mostly that involves running or going to the gym, however, on the odd occasion I can switch off and absolutely binge Netflix.
