Beyond the Classroom – A Work Experience Journey with Miller Knight

At Miller Knight, we believe in supporting the next generation of talent by offering meaningful work experience opportunities that go beyond the classroom and into real-world learning.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Year 10 student, Blanka to gain a hands-on insight into to the world of contracting.

Read on to hear directly about her week, what surprised her the most, and what she’s taking away from her time with us.

Hi, I’m Blanka and I did my work experience here at Miller Knight.

My experience was amazing: everyone was so kind and helpful, I enjoyed working in the range of different departments, and I didn’t want to go home most of the time.

I loved filling out invoices and seeing who pays us and who we pay for different services and materials. I struggled a little with CAD and architectural drawings, but when I got the hang of it, it was a blast! When I helped with booking hotels and apartments for the people working on site, I realised how stressful it was to not get the check-in information until an hour before check-in. Going on site was incredible! It was very interesting to see how much work and time goes into making a school theatre fireproof. I even sat in on a meeting that showed me exactly how much effort it takes, especially behind the scenes. Marketing was completely different to the rest, watching handmade videos crafted by a one-person department that took months to make was something that made me realise that if one woman can do it, I can do my Chemistry homework on time.

Throughout my time here, I have learned so much. I’ve learned that every role, big or small, is an essential building block in a company. When I filled out invoices, I realised that a tiny error could have a massive impact. Booking apartments for the on-site workers taught me just how much back and forth emails and messages go into a one-night stay in London. As I learned how to use CAD, I knew that I had to get the measurements perfect, down to the millimetre. Marketing showed me just how much one person can do with Canva and Powerpoint.

This work experience is ingrained into my memory, filling it with laughs, and experience that I will never be able to find anywhere else. When it comes to applying for a job later in life, this will be the first thing I will speak about (after telling them what my favourite sweet treat is – if anyone is curious, it is a white chocolate and raspberry muffin, made by yours truly). Being at Miller Knight will always be a core moment that I will boast about to employers, friends, family, and anyone!

From the depths of my heart, I want to thank everyone at Miller Knight for the opportunity of a lifetime. I am eagerly awaiting to my job and make it a two-woman marketing department!
