ST GEORGE'S HOSPITAL, ST GEORGE'S UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

PROJECT BACKGROUND

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are the largest healthcare provider in southwest London, with over 9,000 dedicated staff caring for patients around the clock.

Located in Tooting, London, St George’s Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Europe and is one of the country’s principal teaching hospitals, training medical students and a hub to conduct advanced research.

SERVICES PROVIDED

Following a third-party fire compartmentation survey which identified a number of breaches within the hospital’s Lanesborough Wing, Miller Knight were requested by the client to conduct remedial works to rectify the missing and inadequate passive fire protection.

Areas which required works included operating theatres, canteen areas, kitchen, delivery suite, paediatrics, special care baby unit, offices, and ancillary areas.

Scope of works included:

  • Removal and reinstatement of suspended ceilings.
  • Fire stopping works to numerous areas of the hospital in accordance with the fire plan.
  • Repairs to 60min fire compartmentation walls.
  • Installation of fire and smoke dampers to the ductwork passing through the 60min walls.
  • Installation of connections to the fire alarm system.

The project was undertaken within a live hospital environment, with over 9,000 staff and a high volume of patients and visitors, our works were delivered with zero complaints and complied with safeguarding requirements.

Due to client budget and financial timelines, the project had to be completed within the financial year. We worked to a structured 10-week programme and were able to complete ahead of schedule, in the best interests of the client.
