9-11 LOW STREET, ASHFIELD DISTRICT COUNCIL
Scope of works: Regeneration
Client: Ashfield District Council
Value: £1.2m
Duration: 28 weeks
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Sutton Community Academy had a remit to expand teaching into the local area. With the support of Ashfield District Council, vacant retail and office space was acquired with the purpose of revitalising the building to provide an educational hub within Sutton-in-Ashfield town centre.
The repurposing of the building supported the regeneration of the local high street, increasing footfall and thus supporting the local community.
This is the third scheme that Miller Knight has supported Ashfield District Council with, via the £6.3m Future High Streets Fund to create local opportunities and support student learning at Sutton Community Academy.
SERVICES PROVIDED
Miller Knight were appointed to redevelop and reconfigure the disused building, including full upgrade to services and redesign of the existing space. The project was located in a busy town centre so careful planning and co-ordination of deliveries and the works was required to ensure the safety of the public and surrounding business users.

- Strip out of existing partitions and fittings.
- Reconfiguration internal space and drainage system to create flexible teaching spaces.
- Reconfiguration/installation of mechanical and electrical services, including fitting of PVs to the roof and light tubes to minimise energy usage.
- Installation of access control system to ensure student safety/safeguarding.
- Passive fire protection works; new compartmentation and fire doors.
- Replacement of floor and ceiling finishes.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Miller Knight strive for success and the highest quality outcome for any contracted services.
- REPEAT CLIENT: We have previously worked with Ashfield District Council on various projects, enabling us to create a great working partnership.
- SENSITIVE WORKING: Due care had to be made when planning deliveries and activities due to the proximity of the adjacent student college, shopping centre, and pedestrian only high street.
“We are grateful for all the work that has taken place to make this project happen and would like to express particular thanks and recognition to Ashfield District Council, Kinver Solutions, Gleeds, and Miller Knight.”
